About the player
The penalty that carried Mali past Argentina at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland was struck by Sambou Sissoko. He converted the decisive kick in the round-of-16 shootout, and Mali went on to reach the quarter-finals. Earlier that year he had been part of the Mali squad that won the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger. In all he made eight appearances for Mali at under-20 level without scoring. He has no senior caps for the national team.
Sissoko's route out of Mali ran through USFAS Bamako and then Djoliba AC, both inside a single year. In October 2020 the Belgian club K.V. Kortrijk signed him on a free transfer, though visa delays kept him from arriving until December.
Serbia proved a better fit. He joined Čukarički on loan in September 2022 and played 24 matches before the deal expired at the end of June 2023. The club signed him permanently on 1 July 2023, on undisclosed terms, and he has since become a fixture. He passed 100 official appearances for Čukarički and, as of July 2026, had made 124 in the league, scoring four times. The club extended his contract on 30 June 2026, tying him to Čukarički until the end of June 2027.
The trophies have stayed at under-20 level. Sissoko has not won a major honour with Čukarički during his time there.
