About the player
Tiago Freitas came through Benfica's academy, joining the club's U14 side in 2019 and moving up to the U21 squad in July 2025. It is a route entirely internal to Benfica: no other club has featured in his career so far.
His breakthrough with the reserve side came in February 2025, when he began appearing for Benfica B in Liga Portugal 2, the country's second tier. Before that step up, he had already collected silverware in the youth ranks. Freitas was part of the Benfica U19 squad that won the FIFA U20 Intercontinental Cup in 2022, and he later added the Júniores U19 championship in the 2024/2025 season.
Portugal's youth setup has followed him closely. Freitas has been called up across the age groups, from the U16 side through to U17, U18, U19 and U20.
He plays as a central midfielder, right-footed, and now wears the number 88 shirt for Benfica B. What is clear is the pattern of his development: academy football, youth trophies, then a step into senior competition without ever having to leave Benfica.
