About the player
Žan Kolmanič started out at NK Veržej before a stint at ND Mura 05 and a move into Maribor's academy. He broke into Maribor's first team in 2017 and went on to make 44 league appearances for the club.
His move to MLS came with a neat coincidence: Austin FC signed him on loan on 3 March 2021, his 21st birthday. He made himself a regular fixture at the back across 30 appearances that year. Austin exercised its purchase option on 19 November 2021, turning the loan into a full contract.
Kolmanič's route through the Slovenian youth setup was thorough rather than flashy, taking in the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-21 sides for a combined 42 appearances. A senior cap for Slovenia has not followed.
