Forty-four years passed between one championship and the next. When AEL finally ended that wait in 2012, the manager was Pambos Christodoulou, whom supporters had taken to calling "Pambourinho". Two years later, under Ivaylo Petev, AEL won the regular season and did not receive the title: an incident involving fans cost them the trophy.

The club came out of Limassol in 1930, an athletic union rather than a football team alone, and its footballers played their first official match the following year, beating PSC 6:1. By 1934 AEL was among the eight founding members of the Cypriot First Division. The first championship arrived in 1941, decided in a play-off against APOEL.

The strongest run came in the 1950s, when Seviem Ebeoglu was the league's leading scorer in two seasons and part of three title-winning sides.

The cups have come more evenly — seven of them, the most recent in 2019, spread across the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1980s and then a long gap. In 2009 the football section was separated into its own public company.

Since 2022 the Lions have played at the Alphamega Stadium in the suburb of Kolossi, a 10,700-seat ground that replaced the Tsirion Athletic Centre after almost half a century there.

Six league titles in ninety-six years, and only one of them since 1968. The yellow and blue have not found a way to make the good years follow one another.
