Afyonkarahisarspor

The colours, purple and white, were not picked at random — they were meant to echo the poppy, the flower tied to the Afyonkarahisar region, and gave the team its nickname, Purple Lightning. The club itself came close to promotion twice in the same decade, finishing runner-up in its Third League group in 2006–07 and again in 2010–11, when it lost the promotion play-off final to Altınordu.

None of that translated into silverware bearing the Afyonkarahisarspor name; the honours on the shelf, a pair of Third League group titles, belonged to the earlier Yeni Afyonspor incarnation from the 1990s. The club played out of the Afyon Atatürk Stadium, and neither ground nor club outlasted the decade: Afyonkarahisarspor withdrew from the league and dissolved in 2013, and the stadium itself was closed in 2015 and demolished two years later.

The city has since carried the sport under a different banner, Afjet Afyonspor, which lifted the Third League title in 2016–17 — four years after Afyonkarahisarspor's own name disappeared from the fixture list.
