Akademik Svishtov

Akademik Svishtov won the Second Division twice, in 1975–76 and again in 1984–85, and each title took the club into the top flight. The first stay lasted two seasons, 1976–77 and 1977–78. Eleventh place in 1985–86 is the highest the club has finished at that level.

The first spell also brought the best cup run. In the 1977–78 Bulgarian Cup, a straight knockout, Akademik beat Yantra Gabrovo, Dimitrovgrad and Benkovski Isperih, then Slavia Sofia. Marek Dupnitsa stopped them in the semi-final.

Eight years before that run, Stefko Velichkov, a left-back, spent the 1969–70 season in Svishtov. He moved on to Etar Veliko Tarnovo and then to CSKA Sofia, where he won the A Group in 1974–75 and 1975–76. He played at the 1974 FIFA World Cup and won 22 caps for Bulgaria, scoring once.

In 2012–13 it won the North-West fourth division and went up to the second tier. It now plays in the North-West Third League, the third level of Bulgarian football, at the Akademik Stadium, which was last renovated in 2023.

The nickname, The Students, goes back to the general assembly of the D.A. Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov. That assembly founded the club on 10 November 1949, with Professor Velislav Gavriyski as its first president.
