The only major final Braunschweig's basketball side has reached came in 2011, in the BBL-Pokal, where they went down 66–69 to Brose Baskets Bamberg. Semi-final exits in 2012 and 2022 mark the next best domestic runs.

The club exists because a basketball department needed a separate professional shell: it was spun off in 2000 from SG Braunschweig to hold the Basketball Bundesliga licence, before settling on Basketball Löwen Braunschweig in 2014.

Its clearest claim to relevance has been developing players rather than winning with them. Dennis Schröder, born in the city, came through the club between 2011 and 2013, was named the league's Most Improved Player in his final season there and was drafted 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks; he later returned as a shareholder in 2018 and majority owner in 2020. Daniel Theis followed a similar path out of Braunschweig into the NBA, and both were part of the German side that won the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2025 EuroBasket.

Recent seasons have taken the club into FIBA's European Cup, in 2024–25 and again in 2025–26, after an earlier EuroCup campaign in 2013–14. At home, the fixture that matters most is against EWE Baskets Oldenburg — the Niedersachsen-Derby.
