Vladimir Lučić is a player for a side that has spent the past decade turning itself into the country's dominant basketball force, and it was under his leadership that the club finally broke through in Europe, reaching the EuroLeague Final Four in 2022 and again in 2023. The section grew out of the wider FC Bayern München club in 1946, decades before its footballing wing came to define the name abroad, and for most of that history it lived in the shadow of Bamberg and Berlin. That changed once Bavarian money and organisation caught up with ambition.

Seven Basketball Bundesliga titles now sit in the cabinet, though only two of them predate 2014 — the club won back-to-back championships in 1954 and 1955, then waited nearly sixty years before winning again. Since 2014 the titles have come regularly, most recently in 2024 and 2025, alongside five German Cups. The rivalry with ALBA Berlin, contested as the "German Derby," carries more weight domestically than any of that silverware; the historic meetings with Brose Baskets Bamberg have cooled as Bayern pulled ahead on the table.

Malcolm Delaney's 2013–14 season remains the reference point for what a single import player can do here — he took MVP and Finals MVP honours the same year the club won its first Bundesliga title in decades. Steffen Hamann and Demond Greene both have their numbers retired, six and twenty-four, hanging in a building the team no longer even plays in for European nights. BBL games stay at BMW Park, holding 6,700, while EuroLeague fixtures move to SAP Garden, which seats 12,500 — nearly double.
