SC Cambuur has won the Eerste Divisie three times.

The club exists because another one nearly didn't. In 1964, VV Leeuwarden ran into money trouble and pulled its professional side back into amateur football. SC Cambuur was formed to carry on paid football in the city, and much of VV Leeuwarden's playing squad moved across to the new club.

Cambuur have gone up and down since. Promoted in 2013, they were relegated again in 2016, and 2005 brought a financial crisis the club only narrowly survived. In the Eredivisie itself their best return is a ninth-place finish, in 2021/22, the season after that last promotion.
