Cardiff Corinthians

Radyr sits on the edge of Cardiff, a village folded into the city's northern boundary, and it is there, on Station Road, that Cardiff Corinthians have made their home since 1974. The ground belongs first to Radyr Cricket Club, founded in 1890, and the footballers share it still — a thousand seats around a pitch that never quite stopped being a cricket outfield first.

The club traces itself to 1897, when players from the Alpha Cricket Club put together a football side of their own; the name Alpha has stuck to them ever since, alongside The Corries. What they built across the following decades was not a single golden era but a habit of winning the Welsh Amateur Cup in whichever generation happened to be playing — 1914, then 1929 and 1930 in successive years, again in 1934, and once more in 1962.

The rivalry that mattered most, with Cardiff Grange Harlequins, has had nothing to feed on since Grange Harlequins folded; a fixture that ran hot through the 1980s simply ran out of an opponent. What continues instead is the club's own output at youth and amateur level, and the name of Sir Herbert Merrett sits apart from the run of players who wore the black and navy without leaving that kind of mark.

Honours have kept arriving in recent years rather than thinning out: the South Wales Alliance League Premier Division in 2023, the W John Owen Cup in 2022, and the Ardal Southern Cup this year, 2025. For a club playing in front of a thousand people at most, the target has stayed the same one it set itself over a century ago — winning the competition in front of it.
