Eger

Eger won NB II, the Hungarian second division, three times over — in 1968, in 1983/84 and again in 2011/12 — and three times found NB I a level apart. The best of those spells came in 2012/13, when the team stayed up for the season and also reached the quarter-final of the Hungarian Cup, its furthest run in that competition.

Below the top two divisions, Eger's usual home for much of a century was NB III, won seven times between 1949/50 and 2010/11. The most recent title came lower still, in the county league: Heves Megyei I. Osztály in 2017/18, sealed by a 6-1 win over Balatonfüred in the promotion play-off.

The club's age depends on which document is asked. A historical commission set up by Eger itself settled, in 2024, on 21 June 1900 — the day the football section of ETK was created — as the official founding date, ahead of a 125th-anniversary year. Hungarian Wikipedia's infobox instead gives 1907, tied to the first documented match under the name Egri Ifjúsági Torna Club. The name on today's red-and-white shirts, Eger Labdarúgó Sport Kft., was only registered in 2016, following on from the Egri FC brand set up in 2005.

Home games are played at the Szentmarjay Tibor Stadion, and the fixtures that matter locally go in two directions — to Hatvan, in what is known simply as the Hatvan-Eger derby, and to Gyöngyös, against Gyöngyösi AK in a match the local press calls the Egri derbi.

The name attached most closely to the club left it young. István Géczi came through at Eger before Ferencváros signed him in 1962; he went on to win 23 caps for Hungary, play at the 1966 World Cup and the 1972 European Championship, and take a silver medal at the Munich Olympics that same year.
