Second place in Nemzeti Bajnokság II at the end of 2024–25 sent Kazincbarcikai into NB I for the first time in the club's history. Before that breakthrough, the honours had come at the third-division level, where the club finished top four times, in 1976–77, 1986–87, 2016–17 and 2021–22, with a single second-tier title from 1981–82 standing as the closest it had come to the elite before last season.

The club traces back to 26 June 1957, when local sports clubs Vasas and Szikra were merged on the initiative of the town authorities into Kazincbarcikai Munkás Testedző Kör. It kept that name until the end of 1968, then became Kazincbarcikai Vegyész Sportegyesület. When KVSE split into separate organisations in 1993, the football side carried on as Kazincbarcikai Sport Club, later Kolorcity Kazincbarcikai SC.

Home matches are played at the Kolorcity Aréna, also known as the Péter András Stadion, which holds 1,100 people, 920 of them in the home end. The shirts are blue and yellow.

Of the players who came through the academy, Péter Lipcsei is the one the town remembers best: he started out at the club between 1987 and 1990 before going on to win 58 caps for Hungary, a Portuguese title with Porto, and multiple Hungarian championships in more than 600 appearances for Ferencváros. A "star stone" in his name is set into the pavement in Kazincbarcika.

Midway through 2025–26, its first season in the top flight, Kazincbarcikai sat 12th.
