Elche

It began life as Elche Foot-ball Club.

That lasted until January 1941, when a law banning foreign words in Spanish names forced the switch to Elche Club de Fútbol.

The climbing out took longer. Promotion from the Segunda División came in 1958-59, and within five years Elche had produced the best season in its history, finishing fifth in the top flight in 1963-64. The high point of the decade arrived at the end of it: the 1969 Copa del Rey final, lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao. That remains the club's only major final.

Two more promotions have followed, in 1972-73 and in 2012-13, and the intervening decades were spent moving between divisions rather than settling in one. The club became a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva in 1997.

Home is the Martínez Valero, which holds 33,732. The white shirt with its green stripe gives the side the name it is known by in the town — Los Franjiverdes, the green-striped ones, or els frangiverds in Valencian. When the club has asked supporters to turn the ground white and green, they have taken it as far as the balconies of the city.

What is missing from the record is a trophy. A century on, Elche has won its division three times on the way up and seven titles below that, but the cabinet holds no Copa del Rey and no league championship — only the runners-up place from 1969.
