Cricket in England answered no summons: village and club sides had been arranging matches for years before anyone thought to gather the best of them under one name, and the fixture that historians now point to, an 'All-England' team taking the field on 9 July 1739, was a convenience rather than a founding. The side that carries the name today traces its formal international life to a Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 15 March 1877, which England lost by 45 runs to the country that would become its oldest opponent. For decades afterwards it was the Marylebone Cricket Club, from its Lord's headquarters, that picked the team and ran the tours; only on 1 January 1997 did the England and Wales Cricket Board take that job over, and Lord's, still styled the home of cricket, remains its address.

England helped write the sport's international rulebook before that, joining the Imperial Cricket Conference on 15 June 1909 as one of the three founder members. The team plays in white for Tests, blue for one-day cricket and red for the Twenty20 game, and switches between grounds that would each host a national side alone in most countries: Lord's, the Kia Oval, Old Trafford, Edgbaston.

Against Australia the contest has its own name, the Ashes, and its own ledger: 32 wins for England as of August 2026. The white-ball game has been kinder in the modern era than the red-ball one — a Cricket World Cup won in 2019, on a super over, after three lost finals before it, and two T20 World Cup titles, in 2010 and 2022 — while the World Test Championship has yet to yield a final appearance.
