FC Porto

In the winter of 1958, coach Béla Guttmann led Porto to the league title, and, according to the story that has followed the club since, cursed it never to lift a European trophy again after a defeat to Benfica. In 1987 Porto beat Bayern Munich in the European Cup final, and the club has since added a second Champions League, won under José Mourinho in 2004 against Monaco, along with two UEFA Cup and Europa League titles and an Intercontinental Cup double.

The club itself was founded on 28 September 1893 by António Nicolau de Almeida, then went quiet for over a decade under pressure from his family, before José Monteiro da Costa, who had studied in England, revived it in 1906 and set the city's organised football in motion. Its blue-and-white striped shirt and the nickname Os Dragões have carried through the 31 Primeira Liga titles that followed.

Fernando Gomes remains the club's all-time top scorer with 355 goals. That trade runs through the academy known as the Fábrica de Craques, the Factory of Wonders, which raised Deco, Radamel Falcao, Hulk and James Rodríguez before selling them into Europe's bigger leagues, and continues to do so with players such as Vitinha and Diogo Costa. Matches against Benfica, played as O Clássico, still carry the weight of that old rivalry.

Porto moved into the Estádio do Dragão in November 2003, replacing the old Estádio das Antas. The ground holds just over 50,000, and it is there that Porto begin the current Primeira Liga season.
