Sarajevo head into this season still riding last year's silverware — the Bosnian Cup, lifted in 2025.
The club took its current name only after passing through several others. Formed on 24 October 1946 from a merger of two local sides, Udarnik and Sloboda, it played first as FD Torpedo, a nod to Moscow's Torpedo, before becoming FD Sarajevo in 1947 and then SD Metalac — the metalworkers' sports society — in 1948. FK Sarajevo was settled on in May 1949.
The team's biggest domestic breakthrough came under Yugoslavia's old system, in 1966/67, when Sarajevo became the first club from Bosnia and Herzegovina to win the Yugoslav championship. The captain that season was Asim Ferhatović, known as Hase.
Across town, Željezničar remains the fixture that matters most. The two sides' meetings are known locally as the Vječiti derbi — the eternal derby — and little separates the clubs when it is played.
