«El Lobo»
In 1978 Gimnasia M. went to La Bombonera for a Campeonato Nacional fixture and beat Boca Juniors 5–1. Those two afternoons are the high-water mark of nine appearances in the old Campeonato Nacional between 1970 and 1984, and 1984 was the last time the club played in the top flight.
The club exists because gymnastics-and-fencing men in Mendoza wanted nothing to do with football. The footballers left the Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima, founded in 1890, and set up on their own on 30 August 1908.
The ground in Parque General San Martín opened on 25 March 1934 and holds 11,500. It carries the name of Víctor Antonio Legrotaglie. Juan Gilberto Funes played here in the early 1980s before River Plate and the Copa Libertadores.
Then came 41 years outside the second tier's promotion places and below. A 1–0 win away to Talleres de Córdoba in the 2014 promotion play-off, and the Torneo Federal A in 2017–18. In October 2025 they held their nerve on penalties against Deportivo Madryn to win the Primera Nacional and take a place in the Liga Profesional for 2026.
Mendoza has four clubs of weight — Godoy Cruz and San Martín among them — but only one Clásico Mendocino. Gimnasia and Independiente Rivadavia have met more than 260 times, and both now sit in the same division again.
