Gabino Teira brought people together in Torrelavega to found a gymnastics society. Sociedad Gimnástica de Torrelavega took the royal title in 1923, becoming Real Sociedad Gimnástica de Torrelavega. Financial trouble then forced a rename to Club Deportivo Torrelavega in 1930, a name the club carried until 1943.
Home games are played at El Malecón, rebuilt in 2011 and holding 6,007.
A tier higher, in Segunda División B, the club topped its group in 2000 and then let the promotion slip in the play-off.
Derbi Cántabro against Racing Santander, a fixture dating back to 1913, is the one marked on the calendar; closer to home there is the derby with SD Barreda and matches against CD Laredo.
