Grapiuna Itabuna

In 1996, the club arrived in Itabuna. They took the name Aurinegro Baiano from the fallen Itabuna Esporte Clube, borrowing both its identity and its enemy. The original brand, Itabuna Atlético Clube, lasted four years before the changeover to Grapiúna, a shift that left the supporters with a new sign above the door and the same match to win.

Their only real taste of the top flight came in 1997, and it was brief. They finished eleventh out of twelve teams in the Campeonato Baiano First Division. The relegation came on the final day, and the club was sent back down to the Second Division almost as soon as it had climbed up. But the club had another path. In that same first year, 1996, they reached the final of the Second Division. They lost to Juazeiro Social Clube, but the scoreline mattered less than the consequence. The runners-up spot brought promotion anyway, a reward for getting close enough to matter. Five years later they tried again, losing this time to Palmeiras do Nordeste. Two finals, two defeats, and a pattern of near-misses that kept them in the game longer than expected. The ground they call home, the Estádio Luiz Viana Filho, is called Itabunão by those who live with it. At 11,745 seats it is the largest in southern Bahia, a concrete bowl that has seen the city’s teams come and go since it opened in 1978. The rivalry with Itabuna Esporte Clube, the Clássico Grapiúna, is played out here, but the stadium belongs to the city, not just to the club. There are no major titles to hang in the rafters. No league championships, no cups lifted. Just two silver medals and a single season in the top tier that ended before the summer break. The club exists in the space between what could have been and what is. It does not claim glory; it claims the right to keep playing.
