Leonico

When Leônico stepped onto the pitch in 1967, they were playing alongside giants from Rio and São Paulo. The club was founded on April 3, 1940, when a group in the Pau Miúdo neighbourhood decided to give the city a team wearing the colour of the sunset. That maroon and white identity stuck, even as the headquarters eventually moved to Simões Filho, far from the historic streets where the name was first spoken.

The 1966 Campeonato Baiano title was not merely a trophy on a shelf. It proved that a local side could challenge the established order, a sentiment echoed when they reached the final again in 1978 and 1984. Those near-misses mattered more than the silverware itself, keeping hope alive for a city that refuses to let its teams fade into obscurity. Even the later success in the Segunda Divisão in 1991 felt like a correction of the record, ensuring the club’s name appeared alongside the elite rather than in the shadows.

Today, the games are played at the Estádio Professor Jodilton Souza, often called Arena Cajueiro. The ground sits in Feira de Santana, a move that separated the team from its birthplace but kept the fans close enough to fill the 7,000 seats. They call themselves the Crimson Lion, a mascot that has watched them rise from the Torneio Início victories of the 1960s to the brief shines in Série A. The anthem still sings of the flag’s colours, and the supporters still fill the stands, proving that while the city changes, the lion remains.
