Four local teenagers, Tom Quinn, Larry Byrne, Frankie Ward and Henry Lawless, formed Greystones A.F.C. in 1924. In 1969 a second club, Greystones United, appeared. Demand for underage football in the town had outgrown what the older side could offer. In 2015 they merged under the United name. The green and white of the original club stayed, with red and black as the change strip.
For decades the football happened at Darcy's Field, known locally as "The Bog". The club decided in 2003 to move to Woodlands, at Killincarrig, and the first match there was played in May 2006. The site now has a clubhouse and seven pitches, one of them a full-size all-weather surface. The same year brought the club's one trophy, the Metropolitan Cup, won as Greystones A.F.C. The Leinster Senior League also named it Most Progressive Club.
The senior side has reached the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Cup three times, in 2002, 2011 and 2017. The last of those ended in a 3-0 defeat to Sheriff YC. In 2019 Liverpool's "Training S.O.S." programme came to the club, and Jason McAteer turned up to coach. Since 2022 the club has worked with Bray Wanderers on women's and schoolboy football, and the arrangement was extended in 2024. The local fixture that matters is the Greystones Derby against Sporting Greystones.
Paul McShane started at Greystones, moved to Manchester United and won 33 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
