Ballymacash Rangers

That changed in May 2022. Under manager Lee Forsythe, Ballymacash had scored 126 goals in 30 league games on their way to the Mid-Ulster Football League Intermediate A title, then beat St James' Swifts in a playoff to reach the NIFL Premier Intermediate League for the first time. The same year produced the first live-streamed match in that competition, against Lisburn Distillery, their nearest rivals and the fixture the town still calls the Lisburn derby.

Two names carried that period. Michael Gault, once Linfield's captain and a Northern Ireland international, came in as player-manager before handing over to Forsythe, and Jordan Morrison, a centre-back who came through the club as a boy, wears the captain's armband now. Off the pitch, the Ballymacash Sports Academy, running since 2017 as a community-owned enterprise, works with more than 200 children from the estate, and the current first team is in large part its output rather than a squad assembled from outside.

Honours have followed at a pace unusual for a club this size: an Intermediate B title in 2013, the Intermediate A championship that won promotion in 2022, and the Steel & Sons Cup this season. They reached the sixth round of the Irish Cup too, a rare run for a team still finding its feet in senior football.

None of it shows in the ground. The Bluebell Stadium holds 1,280, tucked off Rushmore Drive, red and blue running through everything the club puts on a pitch there.
