The Fifth Round of the 2016–17 Irish Cup is as far as any Portstewart side has gone, and that same season doubles as the one the club still measures itself against: promotion secured through the Intermediate Second Division title, followed by the Intermediate Challenge Cup and the Intermediate League Cup inside the same campaign. It put Portstewart back in the Premier Intermediate League.

The club dates to 1968, formed to play in the Castlerock and Coleraine District League, though sides carrying the Portstewart name were turning out as far back as 1926. Two Northern Ireland Intermediate League titles, in 1984–85 and 2016–17, alongside a single Irish Intermediate Cup won in 1993–94 and four Craig Memorial Cups.

Home games are played at what was long known as Mullaghacall, or Seahaven, a ground that holds 1,500 and took on a sponsor's name, The R Kings Competitions Stadium, in July 2025. The nickname, the Seahawks, and the sky blue and navy colours have outlasted any of that.

Proximity does the rest of the work locally. Coleraine sit close enough to give the fixture its edge, while Moyola Park turn up regularly enough in the intermediate leagues to count as the more familiar rival on the pitch. Local press sometimes stretches "North West Derby" to cover matches against Limavady United too, though nothing carries that name officially. The youth setup has picked up SuperCupNI wins.
