Queen's University

On 4 January 2020, Queen's University Belfast A.F.C. beat Linfield 2-1 in the fifth round of the Irish Cup. Linfield were reigning champions of the Northern Ireland Premiership; Queen's had been promoted out of intermediate football only the previous year and sat a division below in the Championship. It is the result the university side is best known for outside its own competitions.

Those competitions go back further than the club's league record does. Queen's was formed in 1910, two years after Queen's College Belfast became a university in its own right, and its oldest trophy has nothing to do with the Irish pyramid: the Collingwood Cup, contested between university sides from across Ireland, was won thirteen times between 1920 and 1985, with UCD the recurring opponent. Promotion to the Championship followed a different route — the NIFL Premier Intermediate League title in 2019, built on an Intermediate Cup win the year before and, in 2014, a run to the Irish Cup semi-final.

Home games are still played at The Dub, on Upper Malone, where 330 of the ground's 1,000 places are seated.
