«Cacique da Fronteira»
Every year Guaraní's meeting with Grêmio Esportivo Bagé settles a municipal championship the two have fought over for decades.
The eleven friends who put the club together at Praça da Matriz in 1907 wanted to call it Internacional; they settled instead on the name of Carlos Gomes' opera Il Guarany . The nickname that stuck, Cacique da Fronteira, has outlasted most of what the club has won.
What it has won belongs mostly to another century. The two Campeonato Gaúcho Série A titles date to 1920 and 1938, and the run of interior championships that followed stopped in 1962. Since then Guaraní has measured itself in lower divisions, Série B and Série C, and in the twenty-one city championships.
One player did leave for something bigger. Branco was born in Bagé and started out at Guaraní before going on to lift the World Cup with Brazil in 1994.
The more recent story runs downhill and back up. Relegation to Série C came in 2017; promotion back into Gauchão's top flight followed in 2021, and again across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In February 2025 Guaraní played its first ever match in the Copa do Brasil, more than a century after its founding.
