No Israeli side has won more domestic cups: sixteen, a haul that includes a shared 1928 final and five wins between 1999 and 2012. A Toto Cup followed in 2002, and further back, in 1967, Hapoel Tel Aviv were crowned champions of Asia.
The club that built that record almost never existed. A first attempt folded after eighteen months; a second try, in 1925, went nowhere either. It held on the third attempt, on 15 May 1926, when members met in a hut on King George Street, on ground now covered by Gan Meir park, and settled on the crest the club still wears. A year later the Allenby side, formed by Shlomo Polyakov and carrying players who had walked out on Maccabi over a dispute with its board, merged in and gave Hapoel Tel Aviv the shape it kept from then on.
