Indonesia's under-19 side spent last year defending a regional title rather than chasing one, and under Indra Sjafri it did just that: the 2024 AFF U-19 Championship ended with a 1-0 win over Thailand, a repeat of the 2013 triumph over Vietnam, when the trophy was decided on penalties, 7-6, after the sides could not be separated.

The squad answers to the PSSI, the country's football federation, formed on 19 April 1930, and the age group carries no separate founding date of its own. It trains at the PSSI Training Center in the new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara, built on East Kalimantan land still being cleared for the wider city around it, with two pitches in operation and a mini stadium for 5,000 planned alongside them.

The Garuda Nusantara nickname reaches back further than either AFF title. In 1961 Indonesia shared the AFC Youth Championship with Burma, and through the following decade kept returning to finals without closing them out, runners-up in 1967 to Israel and again in 1970 to Burma.

The continental title from 1961 has not been won outright since, only shared, and the Asian final has not returned to Indonesian hands in the finals that followed.
