Phea Sopheaktra took over the Koupreys' bench in July 2024. Cambodia lost 3-2 to Timor Leste and 2-0 to Indonesia, finished the group with three points and did not reach the semi-finals.

The team travels under the same nickname as the senior side, named after the kouprey, Cambodia's national animal, and wears the blue and red of the national flag. It last hosted the tournament in 2015, when the squad took fourth place in a group against Australia, Myanmar, Singapore and the Philippines.

Youth caps here have fed the senior team more than once: Sieng Chanthea played for the U19s in 2019 before going on to win 49 caps for Cambodia's first team, one of several players the Football Federation of Cambodia has pushed through its academy at Bati, outside Phnom Penh.

Thailand and Vietnam remain the sides Cambodia measures itself against at this level. For now, the task is simpler: build on a young coach's first campaign and try to get out of the group stage the next time the AFF age-group tournament comes around.
