Under Jakraphan Panpi, Thailand's under-19 side is building toward the next AFC U-19 Championship qualifying cycle after back-to-back final defeats to Indonesia, in 2022 and again in 2024, left the AFF U19 Championship without a trophy since 2017. There is no fixed home ground; the squad trains and plays wherever a qualifying draw sends it, gathering players for a few weeks at a time before disbanding back to their club academies.

The age group traces its international record back to 1959, decades after the Football Association of Thailand itself had already been running the game domestically. Known as the War Elephants, in blue, red and white, the generation carried the same identity long before this particular squad existed.

Its strongest period sits far in the past: six titles at the AFC Youth Championship, in 1961, 1962, 1967, 1969, 1972 and 1976, a run built when Thailand set the standard for youth football in the region. Regional success returned decades later at the AFF U19 Championship, won in 2015 under Anurak Srikerd and again in 2017, though since then the final has turned into a stumbling block rather than a formality.

The value of the age group shows less in trophies than in who comes through it. Chanathip Songkrasin wore the shirt in 2011 and 2012 before becoming a key player for Thailand at senior level, and Supachok Sarachat followed the same path through the 2016 squad on his way to the national team.

Six regional or continental titles across more than six decades is the return so far — the last of them nine years ago.
