«Current»
The 2025 season ended with Kansas City Current holding the NWSL Shield, awarded for the best regular-season record, and then losing the championship final to NJ/NY Gotham FC. It was the second final the club has lost: the first came in 2022, against Portland Thorns FC, in only its second year of play.
The franchise was granted in December 2020 and started in the 2021 season, in a city that had already lost two women's teams — FC Kansas City, which won the NWSL Championship in 2014 and 2015, and the Utah Royals FC, which took those assets west. The Current is a separate legal entity rather than a revival of either, though the two championship banners belong to the same city and the ownership group, led by Chris and Angie Long with Brittany Mahomes, built accordingly.
What they built is CPKC Stadium at Berkley Riverfront Park, 11,500 seats, the first purpose-built stadium in the world for a women's professional club.
Vlatko Andonovski, who coached FC Kansas City to both of those titles, is back on the touchline. Lo'eau LaBonta captains the side and is the last playing link to that earlier era.
But the player Kansas City knows best is Temwa Chawinga. In 2024 she scored 20 goals in a season, which no one in NWSL history had done, and took both the MVP award and the Golden Boot. She took both again in 2025.
