Los Angeles had gone a decade without a women's professional football team. The Los Angeles Sol folded in 2010, and nothing filled the space until a group of investors — most of them women — set out to build a club. Angel City FC was the result and the first professional sports team in the United States to be majority-owned and majority-led by women.

Natalie Portman is the founder whose name travelled furthest, and she has spoken about the club as a project aimed at what young female athletes see in front of them rather than at the balance sheet. The balance sheet arrived anyway. In July 2024 Bob Iger, chief executive of The Walt Disney Company, and Willow Bay bought a controlling stake for $50m, a deal that valued the club at $250m.

The kit colours read as a description of the place: Asphalt, Armor and Sol Rosa.

On the pitch the record is short. The club reached the play-offs in 2023, finishing fifth in the regular season, and lost the quarter-final to OL Reign. In 2025 they were back in the fight for a place, beating Orlando Pride in August to pull level in the race.
