Turkey has become the measure Kosovo test themselves against. In 2019 they took their first competitive win anywhere by beating the Turks 2–0 in qualifying for the 2021 European Championship, and seven years later Turkey ended their run in the play-offs of the 2025–26 Nations League, keeping them out of League A. Between those two results sits most of what the Dardanets have built as a team.

Before any of that, the side barely existed as its own entity. It played its first recorded match in September 2015, a 2–2 draw with Albania in Durrës, at a time when Kosovan players still moved between the two squads and the team was known informally as "Albania B." Recognition from UEFA and FIFA arrived within days of each other in May 2016, and the first match that counted under that recognition came the following March, a defeat to Poland at the Cyprus Women's Cup.

Erëleta Memeti captains the side and has scored 13 of its goals, the most of anyone who has worn the shirt, while Kaltrina Biqkaj has been capped 55 times. Sami Sermaxhaj now manages a team that has climbed to around 85th in the world rankings, having been as low as 91st in early 2024, and that has twice put eight goals past an opponent, against Estonia and Gibraltar.

Home games are played at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina, the only ground in the country cleared by UEFA for internationals, renamed in 2018 in honour of the former Kosovo men's captain. The players take the field in blue, a colour tied to the nickname Dardanets, after the Dardanian people who once lived across this same ground before there was a stadium, or a federation, or a team to fill it.
