La Bañeza FC

La Bañeza FC won the Primera División Regional Aficionados de Castilla y León in 2012–13, the result that carried the club back into the national pyramid and into Tercera for the 2013–14 season. Nothing since has matched the run of 1999–00, when the side finished second in Tercera and reached the promotion play-off for Segunda B — a barrier it never got past.

The club was founded on 15 June 1956 in Benavente, in the province of León, and plays now as a strictly amateur outfit in the sixth tier of Spanish football. Home games are at the Estadio La Llanera, which holds 3,000. The purple shirt gave the team its nickname, Los morados, worn with white shorts and purple socks.

One name recurs in the club's more recent history: Claudio Medina came through between 2012 and 2014, played 66 matches, scored 15 goals, and moved on to Segunda clubs including Elche. Rikardo González Prieto, known as Richi, captained the side for 14 seasons up to 2020.

The fixture that still matters most is against CD La Virgen del Camino, the Derbi leonés, a meeting shaped by decades of both clubs representing León in the same divisions. Games against Atlético Astorga are also billed as local derbies, though without the same weight of history behind them.

Two appearances in the Copa del Rey, in 1970–71 and 2000–01, remain the club's only taste of the national cup competition.
