Maardu

Maardulinnastaadion holds a thousand people, which is more than enough for a ground where the away end rarely fills. It is the only home the city's football team has known under its current identity, a modest venue for a club that has spent most of its life climbing rather than sitting still.

The team took shape in Maardu in 1997 and spent its first years cycling through sponsor names — FC Maardu, then Maardu FC Starbunker — before the city itself stepped in as backer in 2016 and the club became Maardu Linnameeskond, the city's own team in name as well as function. What followed reads as a run of promotions: fourth division in 2006, fifth in 2011, fourth again, third, and then the club reached Esiliiga, Estonia's second tier, and won it in 2017. It turned the promotion down. The finances were not there to support a Meistriliiga campaign, so Maardu stayed put, won Esiliiga again the following year, and only went up when it won it a third time in 2021. The one season in Estonia's top flight, 2019, ended with 10th place.

Vitali Gusev scored more than 200 goals for the club across two spells either side of its various rebrandings, and topped the Esiliiga scoring charts in both of the seasons Maardu won it. Andrei Borisov ran the touchline for those same title wins, having played for the club before taking over as manager, and his five years in charge account for most of what Maardu has actually lifted.

There is no fixture in Maardu that carries a name of its own. The club shares the city with Maardu Aliens, and the two meet occasionally in regional cup ties without either side treating it as anything more than a local match; the more regular opposition comes from Tallinn, a short drive west, where clubs like Flora and Levadia have provided the sterner tests. None of it has moved the team out of its own ground, where a thousand seats still cover what the crowd needs.
