Second in Azerbaijan's top flight, a European campaign under way in the FIBA Europe Cup, and a cup already in the cabinet from last season — Neftchi's basketball side is having a busy run in its recent history. The club grew out of the same "Neftçi" Voluntary Sports Society set up in 1937 to organise leisure for the republic's oil workers, and the basketball team still wears the parent club's black and white.
Sabah remain the team to beat in Baku — the derby that decided that title is treated as the fixture of the season, ahead of matches against the city's other side, NTD Baku.
Vitaliy Stepanovsky took over as head coach in July 2025. On court, the captaincy sits with Amil Gamzev, who leads both club and national side. The clearest sign of the team's rising European ambitions came this autumn: American guard Devonte Green scored 35 points as Neftchi beat Kalev/Cramo for the club's first-ever win in the FIBA Europe Cup group stage.
Home games are played in front of a Baku Crystal Hall crowd with room for 12,000 seated and up to 27,000 once standing areas are opened — a capacity built for the kind of derby night that decided last season's title.
