The first Armenian championship, in 1992, finished with two names on it: Pyunik and Shirak shared the title.

It was put together that January by Khoren Hovhannisyan and played its opening seasons as Homenetmen Yerevan. The change to Pyunik came in 1995. The colours on the shirt are blue and white; the earliest sides wore orange.

The name turned out to be well chosen. In 1998 Pyunik dropped out of professional football entirely and stayed out for two seasons. Ruben Hayrapetyan brought it back for 2001, absorbing FC Armenicum in the process, and the rebuilt team won the league that year and did not stop: ten championships in succession, through to 2010.

The domestic haul now runs to 16 league titles, the most recent in 2023–24, along with eight Armenian Cups and nine Super Cups. Home matches are played at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, which holds 14,403.

Europe took longer. In 2022–23 Pyunik came through the qualifying rounds and reached the group stage of the UEFA Conference League. The ownership changed again on the last day of 2024, when Artur Soghomonyan, who had bought the club in 2017, sold it to Anton Farber.

Of those 16 titles, 10 were won consecutively.
