Rangers have never lifted the Challenge Cup with this side, but silverware from Glasgow's own competition tells a different story. The City of Glasgow Cup has gone to Ibrox sides wearing an U19, U17, U20 or B-team crest more than a dozen times since 1991, most recently in 2023, each triumph credited to whichever age group carried the name that season.
That shifting nomenclature makes a single founding date hard to pin down. A Rangers reserve side first took its place in the old Scottish Reserve League back in 1895, long before anyone thought to attach an age limit to a team sheet. The current setup traces only to 2016/17, when the Challenge Cup first opened its doors to development squads from the top flight and Rangers entered as an U20 side; two years later the age limit was raised to U21, and the team has carried that name since.
Home matches are played not at Ibrox but at Auchenhowie, the club's training base in Milngavie also known by its older name, Murray Park. The Academy Stand there, opened in 2019, holds 226 seated spectators — a reminder that this fixture list belongs to a development pathway rather than a matchday operation. When the calendar has called for a Lowland League fixture, Rangers have instead borrowed a ground in Dumbarton.
The kit gives nothing away: blue shirts, white shorts, black socks trimmed in red, the same set worn at Ibrox. Meetings with Celtic's B team still get billed in the press as an Old Firm derby, and City of Glasgow Cup ties have been where the two sides cross paths most often.
The academy has sent Allan McGregor, Barry Robson, Steven Naismith, Chris Burke and Alan Hutton on to senior careers, and the traffic has occasionally run the other way — Ianis Hagi and Danilo both turned out for the B team in Challenge Cup fixtures during 2024/25. What still eludes them is the Challenge Cup itself; a semi-final in 2019/20 remains as far as the run has gone.
