Real Unión

Irun sits on the French border, and the club that plays there was assembled in 1915 out of two others, Irún Sporting Club and Racing Club de Irún. King Alfonso XIII mediated the merger and attached the royal prefix, which the club then lost during the Second Republic — it played as Unión Club Irún — and recovered after the Civil War.

Four Copa del Rey titles sit behind all that, the last of them in 1927, and two of them came against Real Madrid in the finals of 1918 and 1924 with René Petit in midfield. Petit had played for France at the 1920 Olympics; Patricio Arabolaza, at the same Games, scored Spain's first international goal.

Real Unión was in the room when La Liga was founded in 1929. Relegation followed in 1932 and the club has not been back to the top flight since.

Stadium Gal opened in 1926 on land given by Salvador Echeandia Gal. The white shirts and black shorts give the nickname, Txuri-beltz. The Derbi Guipuzcoano against Real Sociedad still gets played, though these days it is usually the Basque club's B side across the pitch.
