In the summer of 2010, Saturn were still playing in the Russian Premier League. By the end of that year the club had ceased to exist. A debt of roughly 1 billion roubles forced its dissolution, and a side that had spent twelve seasons in the country's top flight was gone within months. Two years later that farm side took up the name again, restarting in the amateur leagues and working back up through the second-tier PFL before Saturn returned to something like its former standing.

Getting to the top flight had taken decades. The club traces itself to 1946, when workers at the Ramenskoye instrument-making plant put together a factory side, and for years afterward the name changed with the politics and sponsors around it — Mekhanichesky Zavod, Krylya Sovetov, Zenit, Trud — before Saturn was settled on in 1962. Promotion to the elite came in 1998, when the club won the First Division, and the run there lasted until the 2010 collapse, its best finish a fifth place in 2007. The nearest the club came to European silverware was the Intertoto Cup final of 2008.

Sergei Rogachev remains the club's leading scorer, while Sergei Pavlov spent more time on the touchline than anyone else, 130 games across two spells a decade apart. Home matches are played at what is now the Leon Arena, renamed under a sponsorship deal in 2023, holding 14,685 under plastic seating. Black and blue kit has given the club its nickname, and its sharpest local rivalry runs against Khimki, the two sides' meetings known in the Moscow region as the suburban derby.

What started it all was smaller than any of that: a works team fielded by a Raménskoye factory in 1946.
