Eight wins, no losses, a Lambert Bowl to show for it, and a place in the university's athletics hall of fame. That championship sat alongside two others, in 1970 and 1972, back when the Saxons played in the Independent College Athletic Conference; the six that followed under the Empire 8 banner, most recently in 2020, filled out the rest of the trophy case.

The Saxons take their name from Alfred the Great, a nod that has stuck since the program's founding in 1895 under coach George Hill. Four appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs followed the conference titles, with quarterfinal runs in 1981, 2010 and 2016.

No coach shaped the program's identity more than Alex Yunevich, whose 177 wins remain the most by any Saxons coach. Across more than a century of football, Alfred's all-time record stands at 560 wins, 421 losses and 45 ties, against opponents that these days most often include Utica and Ithaca.
