Schwaben Augsburg

Rosenaustadion is listed for 28,000, though Schwaben Augsburg rarely need more than a fraction of that: the Regionalliga Bayern side draws around 5,000 for its home games, a gap that says more about where the club has been than any trophy could. Before settling there, the team played at the smaller Ernst-Lehner-Stadion, named for the striker who wore the shirt himself before going on to play for Germany.

The club's roots go back to 1847, when a gymnastics society was formed in Augsburg; football only arrived in 1907, and the sections merged into what became TSV Schwaben Augsburg in 1941. The defining break came in 1969, when Schwaben's professional side split away and joined with BC Augsburg to create FC Augsburg, leaving the parent club to carry on in the amateur ranks by choice rather than necessity. The team born from that split is now its closest rival, and meetings between the two are known simply as the Augsburg derby.

What followed was a slow slide: by 2008, Schwaben had dropped as far as the Bezirksliga, eight tiers below the Bundesliga. Along the way, playing in purple and white as the Violets, the club had already picked up a run of regional honours, among them a Bayernliga Süd double in 1959 and 1960 and a Landesliga title in 2017.

Schwaben Augsburg now compete in Regionalliga Bayern, the fourth tier, having rebuilt the amateur side from scratch since that Bezirksliga low point in 2008.
