Seongnam FC

Sasa Ognenovski headed in the winner against Zob Ahan in Tokyo in November 2010, and the Macedonian defender's goal gave Seongnam a second Asian title, fifteen years after the first. Six weeks later the club were in Abu Dhabi at the FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished fourth — the high point of a side that had already run out of trophies to win at home.

The club that won those things was not, strictly speaking, this one. It began in Seoul in March 1989 as Ilhwa Chunma, owned by the food company Ilhwa, and it moved when the K League told it to: to Cheonan in 1996 under a decentralisation policy, then to Seongnam in 2000. Three championships came in a row before the first move, in 1993, 1994 and 1995, and three more came after the second, in 2001, 2002 and 2003. A seventh followed in 2006.

Then the owner left. In October 2013 the mayor of Seongnam announced the city would take the club over, and in December the purchase from Ilhwa Co., Ltd went through. The name became Seongnam FC in 2014. The yellow and orange kit went with the old ownership, replaced by black and white; the unicorn that gave Chunma its name was replaced by the magpie, and the supporters have called the team the Magpies since.

The first season under the city ended with the Korean FA Cup, won in 2014 — the third in the club's history and, so far, the last thing it has won. Tancheon Stadium, where it plays, holds 16,146.

Seven league titles, and in 2024 the club spent the season in K League 2.
