St. George Saints

The 1983 title came without a final. St George finished top of the National Soccer League ladder that season and were declared champions as minor premiers, with no Grand Final played. The two Grand Finals they did reach ended the other way: Sydney City took the 1982 decider, APIA Leichhardt the one in 1987.

By then the Saints had been in the NSL since the beginning. They were among the clubs that formed the competition in 1977, and among the players who passed through Barton Park in Banksia were Johnny Warren and, later, Robbie Slater. Osvaldo Ardiles turned out for the club as well.

The ground holds 15,000 and still carries the name St George Stadium alongside the older one. The derby with St George City FC is named after the local paper, the St George Leader.

The drop out of the top flight lasted long enough that the return needed its own campaign: the NSW Premier League 2 title in 2013 put the club into the National Premier Leagues NSW the following season.

The red and white came from Hungary. The club was set up in 1957 by Hungarians who had left after the revolution of the previous year, and it played its first seasons as Budapest Soccer Club before becoming St George-Budapest. The Budapest part of the name eventually went; the district it settled in stayed.
