Tochigi Prefecture had no professional basketball team when a group began working toward one in December 2004, and the effort became Tochigi Brex in April 2007, entering the JBL2. A sponsorship deal renamed it Link Tochigi Brex the following year, and in 2019 the club took the name it carries now, Utsunomiya Brex, aligning it with the city that had become its true base even as Kanuma City remained the official "mother town." Navy blue and yellow, the colours chosen for the club, were picked as a tribute to the Indiana Pacers, a nod to the sister-state relationship between Indiana and Tochigi. The results arrived quickly. Brex won the JBL2 in its debut campaign, then the JBL title in 2009–10 and the NBL in 2010–11, climbing through three different top-flight structures in three years. When the B.League was formed, Utsunomiya added championships in 2016–17, 2021–22 and 2024–25, and in 2025 the club beat Al Riyadi 94–93 to take the Basketball Champions League Asia, a first continental title for a Japanese team. Yuta Tabuse, the first Japanese-born player to appear in the NBA, joined the club in 2008 and is remembered as one of its defining figures. More recently it has been D.J. Newbill driving the club forward, named B.League MVP in both 2024 and 2025 before adding the BCL Asia MVP award. The SeaHorses Mikawa have provided the club's sharpest competition over the years, meeting them repeatedly in the Eastern Conference and in finals. Utsunomiya now carries the weight of a team expected to win every season it enters, and after the 2025 continental title it added the East Asia Super League championship in 2026.
