IG Arena seats up to roughly 17,000 for basketball, a scale the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins had not played at before the move for the 2025-26 season; for decades the club made do with the far smaller Dolphins Arena, the old Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, which held around 7,500.

It started as a company team, the basketball department of Mitsubishi Electric's Nagoya Works, founded in 1950. The corporate identity stuck for decades and shifted only in name — Melco Dolphins, then Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dolphins — before the club cut loose from the parent company's name entirely in 2016, joining the new B.League as Nagoya Diamond Dolphins and remaking itself as a city team rather than a factory side.

The B.League era has produced a different kind of success: Western Conference titles in 2021-22 and 2023-24. Hilton Armstrong , once an import forward for the club, has stayed on in Nagoya as an assistant coach, alongside forward Alan Williams and guard Aaron Henry .
