Västra Frölunda IF

IFK Göteborg has crossed paths with Frölunda since long before either side of Gothenburg cared about league position, and Örgryte IS occupies the same city map, but by December 2023 the two clubs signed a formal collaboration, sending under-23 players out on loan and sharing coaching resources.

The club grew out of Gothenburg's western districts on 2 January 1930, though its football side has always lived somewhat in the shadow of its own badge: the nickname Gröna, the Greens, comes from a green-and-white striped kit, while the club actually plays in blue and white. Ruddalens IP, opened in 1983, holds 5,000.

Frölunda's best football years sit in the 1990s. Promotion to the Allsvenskan came in 1997 after winning Division 1 Södra, adding to a Division 1 Västra title from 1991, and across two spells in the top flight — 1993 to 1995 and 1998 to 2000 — the club's highest finish was fifth, reached in 1998. In between, Niklas Skoog took the Allsvenskan's top scorer award in 1995 with 17 goals, a season that still marks the club's clearest individual highlight in the top division.

None of that top-flight standing lasted. Frölunda have since drifted down the pyramid and now play in Division 2 Västra Götaland, the fourth tier, a long way from the club they shared a table with in 1998 — and further still from IFK Göteborg, the neighbour they once simply competed against and now, in part, work alongside.
