Verdes

For a stretch of 2004, the club did not play under its own name. A shirt sponsor gave it a season as Hankook Verdes, and a dispute with the league's organisers and rival clubs turned into a boycott — Verdes sat out rather than take the field under the terms on offer. When the row passed, the name Verdes FC came back with it.

The club had been playing since 1976, when it was founded as Real Verdes Football Club in the Cayo District, and it carries an international record that predates most of Belize's domestic honours list: in 1986, Verdes became the first Belizean club to enter the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, the same year it took an amateur national championship at home. A professional league title took longer — the first did not arrive until the 2007-08 season.

What followed from 2019 has been closer to habit than achievement: Premier League of Belize titles piled up through both the Opening and Closing tournaments, including an unbeaten double in the 2021-22 season, and the run has continued into the 2025-26 season. Internationally, Verdes has made more CONCACAF appearances than any other Belizean club, and in 2022 it became the first from the country to win a knockout series in the CONCACAF Cup, beating Honduras' Platense. Three years later, in the Central American Cup, Cartaginés beat them 8-1 — the heaviest defeat the club has taken in that competition.

Domestically, the fixture that matters most is against San Pedro Pirates, bitter rivals whose championship finals have decided recent seasons; Verdes won the 2023 meeting 2-1. Home games are still played at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, 2,000 seats, under the green and white that gave the club its nickname, the Green Machine — the same colours, and very nearly the same name, the club took the field under in 1976.
