Stadium
Arena da Baixada
Formerly: Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães, Kyocera Arena, Ligga Arena
The ground that stood here before 1999 dated back to 1914, which makes the current bowl a rebuild rather than a fresh start, and the retractable roof that crowns it now was not part of that original relaunch — it took until 2015 for the mechanism, designed by Carlos Arcos, to actually close over the stands. Capacity today runs to 42,372, and the record crowd came only recently: a 2024 league fixture against Atlético Goianiense drew just over 41,500 paying fans, well past the 34,000-odd who used to be cited from a Cruzeiro match back in 2002, before the later expansion.
It sits in Água Verde, on Rua Buenos Aires, a short run from the city centre rather than out on a ring road, which keeps matchdays tied into the neighbourhood around it.
