Arena do Grêmio

The roof is the point. Grêmio's ground in the Humaitá district of Porto Alegre was built with cover over every seat, and that decision has dictated the pitch ever since: shade and cold air sit on the grass through the Rio Grande do Sul winter. The surface laid in 2012 was natural turf reinforced with nylon fibres, on the Wembley model; by the 2025 season the club had switched to Tahoma bermuda, a variety chosen for exactly those two problems, with a move to a full hybrid still under discussion.

Construction ran from September 2010, under contractor Grupo OAS to a design by the São Paulo practice PLARQ Arquitetura, and the ground opened on 8 December 2012 with a friendly against Hamburg that Grêmio won 2–1. That night drew 60,540 — still the attendance record, and above the current listed capacity.

The opening fortnight set the pattern for what the arena has taken on beyond league football. On 19 December 2012 it staged the Fight Against Poverty charity match, Ronaldo's side beating Zidane's 3–2; Brazil beat France 3–0 there on 9 June 2013. It hosted the first leg of the 2016 Copa do Brasil final and the first leg of the 2017 Copa Libertadores final. Five matches of the 2019 Copa América were played there, including the Brazil–Paraguay quarter-final and the Chile–Peru semi-final.

Concerts have matched those crowds: Iron Maiden drew about 60,000 in 2019, Coldplay 50,229 in 2017. The ground carried no sponsor's name from opening until 2025, when the club entered talks over naming rights.
