Enghelab Stadium
Karaj, Iran
The ground in Karaj is the only stadium in the city.
The stadium opened in March 2006, though construction had been dragging on since 2001. It holds 15,000 people. The grass is natural, cut short and green even under the dry sun.
Saipa F.C. played here for fourteen years before moving on. Since 2015, Gol Reyhan has made the place their home. The teams play in the lower tiers of the Iranian league, where the heat takes the sting out of arguments and the referee is ignored more often than not.
The stands are low and close to the pitch, and the wind comes straight through. There is no roof, and the floodlights stand tall and empty when the sun goes down. The city rises behind the stands, a sprawl of concrete apartment blocks and hills in the distance.
The stadium hosted matches in the AFC Champions League once, in 2008, but nothing since. It is not a destination, it is just where the local teams play. The doors are simple, the turnstiles work, and the fans arrive early to find a spot.
There is no history of record crowds or legendary comebacks. What there is, is a place for football in a city that has nothing else. The teams play, the fans watch, and the sun beats down on the concrete.
